Now let’s talk about the different types of NBA betting for real money you can do.

1. How NBA Spread Betting Works

Let’s face it. In NBA betting for real money, one team always gets all the attention. It’s only natural. But what if you love the underdogs? Don’t they deserve some love, too? Yes, indeed. That’s where NBA spread betting comes in.

NBA spread betting is the first step in knowing how to bet on the NBA, and the most popular type of NBA betting for real money. It allows you to bet fairly on either team – the favorites or the underdogs. It looks like this:

Oklahoma City Thunder: +4.5 (-110)
Toronto Raptors: -4.5 (-110)

In this case, Oklahoma is the underdog. The sportsbook has given them more points at the start of the game. That means they have a 4.5 point head start in the books. In order for you to win your bet, they have to either:

  • Win the game outright, or
  • Lose by no more than 4 points.

The Toronto Raptors, on the other hand, are the favorites. They’ve started out with negative points. That means they have to “cover the spread”, or cover the margin, of 4.5 points. If you bet on the Raptors, you’d win your bet only if they win by more than 5 points.

Since there’s no such thing as a half point in basketball, sometimes the sportsbook will add a “.5” to the points. That’s done to avoid a tie, or a push for your bet.

2. How NBA Moneyline Betting Works

Moneyline betting is the backbone of NBA betting for real money. You’ve likely already done it once or twice and didn’t realize. This is when you simply bet on who will win. Apart from yourself, that is.

There is one thing you’ll notice, though. While it doesn’t look the same as NBA spread betting with the negative (-) and positive (+) points at the start of the game, you will see a negative or positive when it comes to the specific NBA odds for each team. That’s because, inevitably, more bettors are going to back the favorite team. Adjusting the odds is the sportsbook’s way of encouraging more bets for the underdog.

Naturally, then, just like with NBA spread betting, the favourite is given lower odds, and the underdog is given higher odds.

They might look like this:

Oklahoma City Thunder: +180
Toronto Raptors: -250

The given odds are always based on a $100 wager. When you see a (-) sign, that represents the amount of money you have to risk in order to win $100. When you see a (+) sign, that represents the amount of money you could win if you bet $100.

In the example above, if you back the Raptors, you’d have to wager $250 in order to win $100. If you back the Thunder, you can bet $100 and profit $180. For each type of bet, if you win, you always get the profit amount plus your original wager back.

At Bodog, you’ll see the NBA odds for a moneyline bet under the column labeled “win”.

3. How NBA Totals Betting Works

Next up for how to bet on the NBA: Totals. Otherwise known as over/under.

Unlike the moneyline where you simply bet on which team will win, totals lets you bet on the final number of points combined between the two teams. But you don’t predict what those points are, the sportsbook does. Your job is to decide whether you think the final combined score will be over or under the sportsbook’s prediction. Totals also have specific NBA odds that determine your payout.

At Bodog, the column for totals is on the far right. It might look like this:

OVER: 112.5 (-120)
UNDER: 112.5 (-110)

The first number is the final combined score predicted by the sportsbook. The second number is the NBA odds for that bet.

In this match, if you bet over 112.5, you have to risk $120 in order to win $100. If you bet under 112.5, you have to risk $110 in order to profit $100.

The reason you have to risk more money to bet over is that more bettors are putting their money on that option. The sportsbook is adjusting the NBA odds to encourage more bets on the under option. Balance.

4. How NBA Props Betting Works

NBA betting for real money wouldn’t be complete without Props betting. All of the other bets we’ve gone over are based on the outcome of a match. Props betting is different. This is how to bet on the NBA with the details. Details like how certain players perform, or the stats for some specific event during the match. The three main types of props bets are on players, team, and season.

Player Props betting allows you to bet on how a particular player will perform during a match. Most commonly, you’d bet on whether the number of points a star player scored will be over or under the score predicted by the sportsbook. Just like with regular totals betting as described above.

Team Props are wagers you make on the performance of a particular team. They don’t necessarily have anything to do with the outcome of the match. For example, you could bet that a certain team will be first to score, or that they’ll be the first to reach 30 points in a match. Another popular team prop bet is over/under a single team’s final score (not the combined score, like with Totals betting).

Season Props are special wagers on either the team or players. These are based on key events within the NBA season. For example, you could bet on a team’s win total for an entire season, or whether or not that team will make the postseason. For players, you could bet a certain player will make MVP, or Rookie of the Year at the end of the season.

Each of the props bets are paid out based on the sportsbooks NBA odds for that particular bet.

5. How NBA Futures Betting Works

When it comes to how to bet on the NBA, futures betting is yet another common choice, and one you’ve likely already done in the past.

Unlike the other types of NBA betting for real money which most often take place on the day of your bet, futures betting is done on events that will happen later on. That could be within one day, one week, or the end of the season.

The most common types of NBA futures bets are who will win the NBA finals, the NBA championships, the Western Conference, the Eastern Conference, or any other pivotal event of the season. You know them now, being an expert and all.

As far as the odds go, NBA odds in futures bets change throughout the season. The sportsbook evaluates each teams’ wins, losses, trades, injuries, and whatever else might affect their chances of winning. The amount of bettors backing a specific team also play a role in how the NBA odds are determined, just like with the other types of bets.

There! That about sums it up for how to bet on the NBA. And how to make lots of real money as you do it. All that’s left now is to slip on your jersey, dribble up to the Bodog court, and do the Slam Dunk Funk. The crowd goes wild. Then: class dismissed.
