How Many Times Have the Kansas City Chiefs Won the Super Bowl?

If you’re reading this, you want to know how many times have the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl. Fear not, Bodog have you covered.

The Kansas City Chiefs will make their fifth Super Bowl appearance in franchise history this Sunday, when they head to Glendale, Arizona to face the Philadelphia Eagles. They had a successful season with a healthy Patrick Mahomes leading the team to a 14-3 record (5-11-1 ATS) and a seventh straight season as the AFC West Division winners.

PARTY PROP SHEET

The absence of Mahomes’ top target from 2021, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, didn’t hinder the Chiefs’ offensive production, as JuJu Smith-Schuster, who signed a one-year contract with the team, has helped fill the gap in a cost-effective way.

Even when Mahomes’ health was less than perfect, as we saw at the AFC Championship game where he was visibly uncomfortable due to a high ankle sprain sustained in the previous game, he still managed to do what needed to be done to secure the victory. His last-minute scramble, aided by a personal foul against the Bengals, put the Chiefs in field-goal range with seconds remaining to seal the victory.

On Sunday, the Chiefs will have the opportunity to add another Vince Lombardi trophy to their small collection. They’ve won two already and came close to a third in 2020. In this look at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl history, we’ll refresh your memory on the conditions that led to the two Super Bowl victories that stand 50 years apart.

Super Bowl IV in 1970

We have to go back to 1970 to recall the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl win at Super Bowl IV. This was the final season that it was called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game and at the time, the older and more established NFL was widely regarded as superior to the younger and less proven AFL.

Coming from the NFL for Super Bowl IV, the Minnesota Vikings were expected to crush the AFL Chiefs as 13.5-point favourites on the spread. In addition to the higher expectations that surrounded the NFL teams, the Vikings had the better season record and were coming off of a dominant 27-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Championship game. However, the Vikings would not only fail to cover the spread, they’d lose straight up in dramatic fashion in one of the biggest Super Bowl shocks of all.

The Chiefs had an unbelievable defensive unit that is still unmatched to this day; they had five starting defensive players who’d eventually end up as Hall of Famers, including All-Star linebacker Willie Lanier and defensive tackles Curley Culp and Buck Buchanan. KC’s defense held the Vikings to just 67 rushing yards and picked off their QB on three occasions. The Chiefs were up 16-0 by half time, and the Vikings were unable to get on the scoreboard until the third quarter when fullback Dave Osborn ran in their only touchdown of the game.

SUPER BOWL SCORE PREDICTOR

The Chiefs’ quarterback, Hall of Famer Len Dawson had his moment in glory after playing five seasons as a backup in the NFL. Dawson got to be a starter when he moved to the AFL and joined the Chiefs; he was highly motivated to prove himself after losing to the NFL’s Green Bay Packers at Super Bowl I.

He played a nearly flawless game at Super Bowl IV where the QB threw for 142 yards, which included one touchdown pass, and completed 12 of 17 attempts; he was picked off once. Meanwhile, the Vikings QBs were picked off three times and failed to complete any touchdown passes. Dawson was named MVP for his impressive performance that resulted in the AFL drawing even 2-2 against the NFL in the four Championship Games.

Super Bowl LIV in 2020

Chiefs fans had to wait 50 years for another Super Bowl victory. QB Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid were in their third year together when they’d hoist the Vince Lombardi. Mahomes had the experience of his sizzling 2018 MVP season that ended in heartbreak when Tom Brady and the Patriots cut their playoff run short. The following year, they won the AFC Championship game, beating the Tennessee Titans, and were paired up against the NFC’s surprise contenders, Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chiefs entered as 1.5-point favourites and appeared very evenly matched against the 49ers in the first half of the game. The 49ers managed a field goal, and Mahomes ran in a score in the first quarter; the opposite occurred in the second quarter for a 10-10 tie at half time. The third quarter went in the 49ers’ favor, with Garoppolo handing off the ball to Raheem Mostert for another touchdown, and Robbie Gould making a 42-yard field goal to go up 20-10.

But in the last several minutes of the fourth quarter, Kansas City took control. Mahomes passed the ball to Travis Kelce and Damien Williams for touchdowns, and then with just a minute and 12 seconds left on the clock, Williams rushed for 38 yards to hammer the nail in the coffin and finish the game 31-20—more than enough to cover the spread. Mahomes won MVP, and Andy Reid won his first Super Bowl as head coach.

Kansas City Chiefs’ Odds to Win Super Bowl LVII

When the gamelines first released right after the Conference Championship Games, the Chiefs were 2.5-point underdogs for Super Bowl LVII. But lots of early action on Mahomes and co. forced the line to change to +2 points and then again to +1.5, which is where it stands at press time. That means the Chiefs will still pay out if they lose by a single point. Those are tight Super Bowl betting odds for the top seeds of either conference, so we expect a competitive game. The total is currently at 51.0 points after flipping higher and lower in the early action.

If you want to increase risk or payout, you can buy points in half-point increments on your bet slip for the Chiefs after selecting the original line. And there are always lots of props to explore; these are a fun way to beef up your bet slip and often you can find some with great value that have gone under the radar. However you choose to bet, we wish you luck with your picks and look forward to seeing the game in Arizona.

So, how many times have the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl to date? Twice. Can they make it three this weekend? We can hardly wait to find out.
