Bodog Entertainment Betting Preview

It’s almost time for the “summer” season here at Bodog Sportsbook. The Super Bowl is well in the rear-view mirror, we’ve turned the page on March Madness, and the NHL and NBA playoffs are already down to their last eight teams. That means it’s time for baseball, tennis, golf – and entertainment betting, one of the hottest commodities here at Bodog.

ENTERTAINMENT BETTING

The biggest events in global culture are available to bet on right now at Bodog, from the Oscars to Eurovision and more. This week, we’re taking a closer look at three of the top entertainment bets on the board. We begin with the silver screen, then it’s the Queen of Pop and the King of Canada (and also some other countries).

Highest Worldwide Box Office 2023

There are many ways to measure the success of a movie, but only one counts in Hollywood: ticket sales. If your film doesn’t earn at least $100 million at the box office these days, you’re probably not going to be walking the red carpet anytime soon.

It’s also difficult to make a big splash if you’re not part of an established franchise like the Marvel Universe or the Star Wars Universe. Those films have dominated the box office over the past decade-plus, starting with The Avengers in 2012 ($1.52 billion worldwide gross) and continuing through Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion) in 2021.

Things are changing, though. As they say in the world of video games, a wild universe appears: the Nintendo Universe, as featured in the new animated film The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This is Nintendo’s return to the big screen after the colossal failure of the 1993 live-action film Super Mario Bros., and it’s already a massive hit, racking up $1.05 billion in gross since its US release on April 5.

This front-runner will be hard to catch. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the –250 favourite over the field at Bodog to finish No. 1 in box office (as per the Box Office Mojo numbers). It’s a perfect movie for the global market, featuring internationally recognized and beloved characters whose voices can easily be dubbed into other languages.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (+500) has only some of those attributes. The first two volumes of this Marvel Universe franchise were big hits, but neither finished atop the yearly box office figures; the third chapter of this trilogy is meant to draw the curtain on the story, so there’s a chance the audience numbers will bump up a little during this weekend’s release as fans flock to see how it all ends.

The Fast and Furious franchise, on the other hand, will outlive us all. Fast X (+800) is the third favourite, and it’s got everything you’d expect from this series, including Vin Diesel in the starring role and appearances from the likes of Jason Statham and John Cena. They say Fast X is going to be the penultimate film in the “main series,” but that’s just opening the door for more movies based around other characters, which they’ve been doing already. We’ll soon see if the people show up when Fast X hits the theatres later this month.

Taylor Swift’s Next Boyfriend

Taylor Swift has made a nice career for herself singing about boyfriend trouble, and she’s got plenty of material to work with. Swift and Joe Alwyn, the English actor and one of Swift’s co-writers the past several years, reportedly broke up last month after six years together.

Rumour has it that Swift may be dating Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, but this hasn’t been confirmed – Alonso isn’t even on the list of potential next boyfriends for T-Swizzle. The +400 favourite at press time is Dylan O’Brien, the New York actor who broke through playing the lead character in the MTV television series Teen Wolf.

O’Brien also appeared in Swift’s own 2021 short film All Too Well and was credited as the drummer on her 2022 track “Snow on the Beach,” so the two definitely have a previous connection. Other top favourites include the usual suspects: Harry Styles (+500), Shawn Mendes (+500), Pete Davidson (+800) and John Mayer (+1000). Tay really does come into her own when it comes to entertainment betting.

Coronation Day

It’s both natural and a bit strange to see how little buzz the coronation of King Charles III (and his wife Camilla) is receiving. If anything, the public has turned against the Royal Family – at least in the press. But this event is still taking place this Saturday, however muted, and the royals still have more than enough of a following in Canada to make this one of the most wagered-on events of 2023.

There are 11 different ways to bet on the coronation at Bodog. It’s a lot like betting on the Super Bowl halftime show; for example, you can bet on which colour dress US First Lady Jill Biden will wear, with Blue checking in as the favourite at +175. Blue is also the favourite for Princess Kate’s outfit at +220, although it’s the co-favourite with Red in her case.

Conspicuous by her absence: Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who will reportedly not be at the side of her husband Prince Harry. You can bet on what Markle will be doing instead on May 6, with “To be photographed in London” and “To attend a coronation tea party” tied at +1200. Note: Rumor has it Markle will stay at their California home with their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Fittingly enough, you can also bet on whether Canada will hold a monarchy abolition referendum before 2030. “No” is the clear favourite at –1600, compared to –700 for the same prop in Australia. You can even bet on whether they’ll do the same in the United Kingdom, although the only option for betting is “Yes” at +4000. Place your bets right now at Bodog Sportsbook, your home for the best in entertainment betting.
